UZEI is a member of INNOVASQUE (Basque Agency for Innovation). UZEI's language technology research and development work dates back to 1988 and the XUXEN (Basque spell checker) project.
In 1993, UZEI took part in the PGTI93 at which the EUSLEM (Basque lemmatiser) project was launched, and subsequently it has carried out research projects essentially through bilateral agreements with various public administrations. Especially significant results of these agreements include:
- Research into lexicon, which provides support for the Royal Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia) in drawing up its Unified Dictionary.
- Design and creation of the corpus of 20th century Basque.
- EUSKALTERM (the current Basque public terminology bank).
- UZEI has taken part as an expert and consultant in linguistic issues in various university/business partnership research projects with the UPV (IXA group). Major projects put in place include XUXEN (spell checker), EUSLEM (lemmatiser), EDBL (Basque lexical database), and MORFEUS (morphological analyser).
UZEI is a pioneer in computer assisted translation and has developed an application for the multilingual management of translation memories (eLENA) which was acquired in 2004 by the Basque government.
