UZEI set up the EUSKALTERM Bank in 1987 by bringing together the dictionaries that had been written up to that point. It has continued to update and add to the Bank with all the dictionaries produced since then.

Right from when EUSKALTERM was set up, UZEI has promoted the spread of terminology using cutting-edge technology: firstly the Minitel system (1987), then Bideotex (1991) and the VT-100 terminal, and finally Internet.

In 2001 EUSKALTERM became the Basque Public Terminology Bank as the result of an agreement signed between UZEI and the Basque government. UZEI continues to be tasked with updating and adding to the Bank in accordance with the directives of the Unified Dictionary of the Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia) and the suggestions made by the various normalisation commissions.
